What are the basic things to check when buying secondhand car?

Am planning to buy a secondhand car but dont have much knowledge on checking the engine or other relevant things to ensure that i would get a good deal. please provide me basic checks for novice...
Check the oil dipstick for color, it should be tan- brown, not burned, or have white frothing stuff on it (coolant). Check the tranny fluid on an auto for color, it should be clearish pink to light light red... not brown. Basically, drive it to see if the engine runs smooth, and the tranny shifts whenit is supposed to and doesnt slip. Check the tires with a quarter, if the head is covered, you wont need tires for a while, also check that the inner and outter tread look the same. If they dont, the steering/ suspension components need work. These are just a few things. If you are serious about a car. Take it to your mechanic, and toss him a few dollars to have hime inspect it. A car is a big investment wether new or old.
if the car is shiny and tires look wet and the engine is clean dont bite, just a ploy to get you to buy. these are just a ploy much like siding on a house makes it look good. when you test drive tell them you will begone for a few hours, if they say no well move on to another car place but if its o.k. take iton the highway, then goto a oil change place mostwill put it on the rack for you so you can look under neath, then take it to a parts store tell them you might have a problem with the battery or starter they check it for free, as you drive over 55 turn on the air let it run hot perferably and drive at least 40 min then return to where you were the owner of car place a news paper under neath hey if it does
