Driving licenses in the U.K.?

Is it possible so get a driving license in the U.K. with a student visa, or do I have to be a citizen? And can a U.K. driving license be used in the United Arab Emirates?

It is possible to get a UK driving license on a student Visa. It is more awkward than if you were a UK citizen but it is possible. For more information visit www.dsa.gov.uk. They should have more answers on their website, if not give them a ring.

It is possible to trade your UK driving license with a United Arab Emirates one upon arrival. There will not be another test needed, but may take some time.

Information on CBT and Motorbike License?

I am 17 years old and have found that I dont really have enough money to pass my driving test, get a car and insure it. I need to be able to get around and I think a motorbike or moped would be best for me. I have a provisional driving license, but am not sure if this also covers motorcycles, does it?

Also what kind of bikes can I legally ride at 17 and what tests do I need to do? Rough prices if anyone knows too.

Thanks a lot

you will need to sit the cbt test. the cost is 110 for a one day course. most bike shops will either do the test or put you in touch with someone who can do it. you will only be able to ride a 125 untill you have sat your full bike test. the cost of insurance will vary depending on where you live and what bike you have.

if you buy a 125 with race fairings then your insurance will be much higher. best to buy a naked 125 as these are cheaper to buy and insure.

Ride safe.

when u got ur provisional did u tick the motorbike bit , a cbt cost about 80 quid and lasts for 2 years after that it has to be retaken or you can do a direct access course u can ride upto 125cc on cbt

Try www.dvla.gov.uk or www.dsa.gov.uk

How many questions are on the dmv permit test if I take it for the first time?

Is it easy?

And how many questions do i need to get right to pass?

(in California)

Thanks.

There are total of 36 questions, you need to get at least 30 correct.

Two driving problems?

ok #1 when I turn i am worried that the wheel don't turn back to straight#2 feel like i have to hit the brake all the way down to stop

On #2, it depends on how quickly you need to stop. If you can coast up to a stop, then slowly hit the brakes. If you need to stop quick, then hit them harder.

Don't worry about #1, the wheel will fall back into place (straight) after turning.

1. The steering wheel will want to get back to straight ahead; it's made to do that, and you'll probably have to slow it down a bit. Practice will help, as you get the "feel" of the car.

2. If the brake pedal goes too low or is soft, you need to have the brake system checked. It may be low on fluid, have air in the lines, or the power brake system may not be working. That needs repair, not practice. Get it checked soon.

What happens when opposing insurance company totals my car?

I was in an accident and the at fault drivers insurance company is saying its a total loss. I am financing the vehicle and just got it at the beginning of the year. I don't believe I have GAP, but do know I need to pay the deductible. Since the accident was not my fault, am I still out of a vehicle? What actions should I take?

No, you do NOT pay the deductible, if the other person's insurance is paying. You only pay the deductible if YOUR policy pays you.

Are you still out a vehicle? Most likely. If you agreed to pay $100,000 for a 1978 Chevy Chevette, you got a bad deal. The insurance company is only "on the hook" for the actual cash value.

They don't owe loan payoff, they don't owe replacement cost, they don't owe any taxes, negative equity, late fees, interest payments, none of that.

So, if you owe less on the vehicle than it's worth, you'll have some money in your pocket. If you owe MORE on the vehicle than it's worth, you'll have to write a few checks to get out of the loan.

As far as action, your best bet is to get a clear idea of your car worth - like at www.kbb.com, private party sale value. That way, you won't be surprised when the adjuster calls.

Contact your insurance company!

Does anyone know how much it would cost to get insurance on one of those huge $200,000 RVs,full coverage.?

If you are an expert RVer please include all approximate costs for living in one. Even if you have info on owning a smaller one please explain. Thanks

living in an r v gets old quickly. I have a r v although not that expensive of a model, and my insurance is $54.00 for six months. I have Geico

I bought a car 2 years ago and never taxed it as did not know it was needed. What do I risk if I tell DVLA?

I am a foreigner

The DVLA obviously do not know that you own the car and so you have not got a V5C in your name. Without that you cannot tax the car.

First get the V5C, you need form V62 (downloadable or from post office) then you can get tax.

If you are not a UK or EU citizen please remember you cannot drive after 12 months of being here until you have passed a UK driving test and if you have not your insurance is almost certainly invalid.

Ignorance is no excuse, neither is " I am a foreigner". The log book contains the information about what you need to do as a new of owner of a car, in regards to registration of same.

How did you know you needed insurance? Guess it may be invalid anyway! Have you got an MOT?

The best thing you can do, is to stop using the car until you have got all the correct documents, because if you had an accident, it would be the other person who would lose out.

Oh, one more thing, have you got a licence or didn't the seller of the car tell you, you needed that as well!

What would you have done if you had run some innocent. person over ,or crashed into someones car. Left the car and run away.Because you had no tax or insurance and because you had not registered the car. That is the trouble in this country foreigners don't bother to find out the laws of the country they are staying in. And normally get away with a lot of things

And??????? You live here - you should make yourself aware of the laws of the country in which you live.

Get it taxed tomorrow and remember that you have been driving around without valid insurance and killing someone would have resulted in a jail sentence for you.

Just tax it from first of april you will need the reg document or just the new keeper section do it at the local post office plus the MOT cert. and valid insurance cert.

tell them you are a foreigner and they wont mind in the least .

wel if you got tags for it you payed tax for it if your have register it i wouldnt say anything not unless you just want to spen d money now

Auto insurance rates question?

How is it when you buy a newer car, your rates increase, while there is no decrease as your car ages?

Pure greed on the company%26#039;s part?

Newer cars need more coverage of insurance. Your rates decrease due to your age, driving record, how many policies under one account. You can also use defensive driving to take 10% (i believe) off the bill as well.

You have a new car you need a lot of stuff covered.. You crash it its going to cost more to replace.. and you also are paying on it.. When you own the car you don%26#039;t need alot of things covered as you would with an new car..

Who

I had a driving incident today. I'm clear sailing on a multiple lane road with 2 lanes in each direction and a turning lane. I'm in the left lane. A truck (the length of a semi) carrying cars (whatever you call those) starts to pull out in front of me in the left lane from the left side of the road. Since the right lane was clear, I moved over to avoid slowing down. It was my impression that the truck was going to take the left lane, but the truck instead crossed the right lane in my path to pull into a place on the right side. I swerved a little on the right shoulder and came to a sudden stop. I held my hand on the horn. The place where the truck was coming out was not straight across to where he went on the other side of the road, it was at an angle, which is why I thought he was going to take the left lane. If there was an accident, the truck would have been at fault for not making sure the right lane was clear, right? As far as if I could have avoided the incident, sure I could have slowed down ahead of time in the left lane. But, in my opinion, there's nothing wrong with making a lane change to avoid slowing down for someone pulling out in your lane, right? And the truck should have made sure the right lane was clear before crossing it, right?

Generally, if I'm a distance away and a semi pulls out in front of me, sure I'll have to slow down a little, but that doesn't usually bother me as long I don't have to stop because they are blocking the lanes. But if a semi pulls out when I'm close enough that I have to stop, then that's not right. Legally, they shouldn't block lanes of traffic, right?

How would insurance deal with something like this if there was an accident? Would they give me crap that I should have slowed down ahead of time in the left lane? Or would they take it that the truck failed to yield to me in the right lane? Because I had no clue that the truck was intending to pull into a place across the street.

Correct. The fault would have been the truck's, for failure to use caution while changing lanes. That's a standard of fault in every state.

Right. They should not be blocking traffic. But sometimes they do it, especially in states with a slower speed limit for large rigs, as a protest.

As to how the insurance would handle it - likely, if there was liability coverage, they'd be making a big fat payment to your estate, after your car got squished by the truck.

I would guess that the insurance companies probably would have done some sort of split on that one. On one hand, the truck driver didn't yield to you, who had the right of way. On the other hand, you had all day to slow down and avoid any problem, but you instead made an obviously incorrect assumption about his intentions.

Just learn from it - next time don't assume you know what the truck is planning to do (big trucks like that will usually drive in the right lane), just back off and let him in and then pass him when you know (not think) it's safe to do so.

Luckily you did ultimately avoid the accident - good job for that.

CAR ACCIDENT ... lady wants 1 Mill for cut finger (California)?

Hi ... there was a car accident in my family where an 80 year old lady hit our car that was crossing a street ...

- relatively low speed at impact

- everyone had seat belts on

- everyone was insured

- no air bag deployment

the old lady got taggedd in her driver door, thus popping her driver door glass ... thus the cut finger.

the car has been repaired ... no problem ( $5,000)

her finger healed long ago. PROBLEM IS SHE IS STILL COMPLAINING ABOUT SOFT TISSUE PAIN / DISCOMFORT in the neck and back nearly a year later ...

SHE WAS BACK HOME AFTER THE ACCIDENT WITHIN AN HOUR THE DAY IT HAPPENED .. and moving about as normal ...

her lawyer is trying to ask for one million $$$$$$$$$$$$ over this. Yes ... 1 Mil !!!!!!!

CALIFORNIA is where it happened ....

WHAT WILL SHE REALLY GET????????? How will this really turn out???

There are some real Insurance Gurus here today reading this ... I hope you might have a moment for your thoughts ...

thank you so much ...

Generally the lawyers will settle out of court for your maximum coverage.

I hate to say this, but she very well may get $1 million for it. Was the acident your family's fault, or hers? Then if she has neck pain, she can say it is a result of the accident and will recieve compensation for punative damages because your family caused the accident. Sorry :(

not $1 mill, but maybe like 50,000, still hurt. no judge in their right mind will give her that much $$ 4 a finger

ok several questions.

$5k for repairs; is that her auto or yours?

did you report to your insurance company?

how did you know about the 1 million? did you receive a letter from the lawyer asking for that much? and if so, appears that they want you to let your insurance company know; they do this to get your attention.

what are you policy limits?

if you have minimum coverage, which i believe could be 5K in CA, (not sure if that is property damage or bodily injury) you are in a world of hurt.

sure she got a cut finger from the glass in the door. also her neck and back maybe a problem since she is 80 years old, and not resilient vs someone younger say age 30.

also; how do you know so much about her? the fact she was home and moving about as normal? are you stalking her?

your insurance company will investigate and make a determination of what her injuries are worth. just because a lawyer demands 1 million means nothing. he is just trying to get your or your insurance company attention. lawyers always ask for the impossible but never get.

5k for repairs is not minor, this would be a decent hit.

you better hope that you have decent coverage on your policy. if you dont have enough to cover her injuries, they will go after your family for the balance owed.

ie; assets; home equity, savings, garnishments etc.

it is doubtful anyone will give you a specific number of what her claim is worth, since we dont have all the facts, her medical records, copy of the damages to your car and hers. only your insurance company can decide the true value of her claim.

Is there anyway i Can I get my license in CT if it is suspended in NJ?

Im supposed to get my license back in august, but i wanted to know if i can go to CT and try to get a license from them. anyone can help?

No, you cannot. My sister had a suspended license in another state, and CT would not license her until she had resolved the situation in that state.

I don't think any states will allow this.

Welcome to the age of computers. Most state DMV's belong to an information sharing compact. A suspension in one state is a suspension in every state.

Can you get your drivers license in ct? and be from ny?

im in school in ct. but i live in ny.

do i have to take the test in ny?

whats the deal on that?

thank u

Since the reason you're in Connecticut is for schooling, you are still considered a resident of New York so you must go by the licensing laws in your resident state.

If you declare residency in CT, then you can get your license in CT.

Maxima SE or GLE.... FAST QUESTION !?!?! THANKS.?

HI, i am 17, getting my first maxima in like a month, its either a 2002 or 2003, i want either an SE or a GLE, but i heard and read that the SE has stiff suspension which is bad, but it has sporty features on the other hand.

I live in NYC btw which has quite a number of road bumps, but i will not be driving very fast

.

Please tell me if the difference is big and which one do you recommend and why?

THANKS AND REALLY APPRECIATE IT !

I would go with the GLE if it has a smoother ride, especially in NYC. The last thing you want on the pothole laden roads in the city is a harsh riding sport tuned suspension that will knock your fillings out.

I have a question about my drivers permit in New Jersey?

Ok Im 18 years old and i finally went to the dmv to get my permit. i passed so i naturally i was happy. Now before i took my test i got this paper which i had to bring up the desk if i passed so i did. Now she stamped it and whats on there is when i was born my eyes ht and the fee with a card in the upper right coener stating certificate not issued. I alsoi have a stamp with my validation number. With that i have stapled behind this paper a regular white sheet of paper containing my driving test appointment which is in october of 09. Now what im asking is if the first page is my permit. Its kinda weird to me that its a peice of paper not like a id card like a license would have. It also has a stamp of GDL. She told me everything and just walked away so i thought i was done and this was my permit and we left. I think its my permit because it says on the front "not valid for practice driving until officially stamped on reverse side". Now on the back it is stamped which says validated for supervised driving. And it has a silver sticker saying the great seal of the state of new jersey. Im just worried because my picture isnt even on it. Im new to this kinda thing so maybe this really is my permit. I dont know. If anyone can help me i would appreciate it Thanks.

Oh don't sweat it.. she gave you your permit... Just make sure you put it in your wallet whenever you go out for a drive with somebody who has a license and make sure you have your state ID too. Just in case you get stopped, you have your state ID to show that it is you on that paper. Goodluck with the roadtest! Be mindful of restrictions and violations!!!

Yup, that's your permit. Just carry it when you drive.

When you get your actual license, you'll get a plastic card with your picture.

Can illegal immigrants get a license?

im wondering beacause a friend of mine(age:16) is an Immigrant and he is worried about this subject so can he get a license or not?

It may depend on the state, since drivers' license are state-issued.

Googling "illegal immigrants drivers license" brought up (it said) over 247,000 hits, so try it and see what's going on.

There are 4 states that do not require proof of legal status for licenses. I think Hawaii is one, and maybe Maryland. I can't think of the others. I want to say Utah.

In some states yes- unfortunately.

CA is giving illegals anything they want practically.

Not legally. They aren't in the country legally why would they be able to drive here legally?

Not in Ohio.

I just traded in an out of state license for a NYS license, how long until I get it?

When I traded it in they gave me this interim paper license, which sucks because it means if I get carded I can't drink. Anyone familiar with this and now how long it takes?

depends on the case load of DMV, but should be 3-6 weeks. They usually run a check on your out-of-state license to be sure it's not bogus or suspended.

About how much would it cost to insure a 2002 Saturn SL2 with about 80,000 miles on it?

I'm having trouble getting quotes online because I'm planning for the future when I move out of the house (so I don't know my address.) Since my job isn't near much public transportation, I'll hopefully take a car with me. I know I will be living somewhere in the northern Chicagoland area like Waukegan, North Chicago, Gray's Lake or Mundeline. Maybe even a place less north like Evanston. It will be where I can find a cheap but decent apartment.

Details:

Northern Chicagoland Area

1 Driver (18)

80,000-90,000 miles.

2002 Saturn SL2

I'd probably go for minimum coverage like Safe Auto, but any kind of educated estimate is welcome!

Thanks in advance!

That depends on a lot of factors but I recommend you to search in this place

ginsurance.notlong.com

here you can get quotes from different companies in your area, thats the best way to find a cheap auto insurance.

no one here can possibly answer your question. There are way too many variables. call for quotes.... but to get a quote, although you may not need an actual address will have to tell them at least the general area where you will be living.

As much as i hate Geico commercials i may go with them, here

insurance.I go through AIG now,but i did call Geico and got a quote.I do apologize for my spelling.Ok i live in NY my car stays in my barn all winter,i took it out today after tunning, fluid changing and all that.I was out ramming,it wasn't a nice day but i had that itch,so i took her out.Geico quoted me $617 and change to insure it,every 6 months, full coverage, theft everything. It's a 2004 Corvette. Is this reasonable you think? Thanks.

I'd grab that quote with both hands.

If you do only use the car for a few summer months they should be able to give a term cover for only the months on the road and a lower rate (basically theft and fire damage) for when it's stored - talk to them some more giving full details of periods on and off the road.

well they one of the top five highest one to use and for a vette sounds about right

How will this 15-20 mph speeding ticket affect my insurance?

I just turned 18 and I am a senior in high school. I live in a small area that is just between two towns. This area is known for its police; they have a tendency to give speeding tickets out like crazy. They hide in places so that they can catch people speeding; the area is generally a 30mph zone. I had a good morning and got a little foot-happy...I sped right up to a cop that hides next to my neighborhood. Needless to say, I was going 50 mph in a 30 mph zone. Without a seat belt. I was extremely honest, so I got a speeding ticket but the seat belt issue was simply a warning. This is my first ticket ever; the only other time I had been pulled over was because I forgot to turn on my headlights...I was 16 at the time.

I have State Farm Insurance and have an extremely decent rate for my age. I have no issues paying the speeding ticket because I did speed...I just don%26#039;t want my insurance to be crushed. I went through driver%26#039;s education, State Farm%26#039;s Steer Clear Program, and I have maintained my grades to ensure that I get a decent rate.

What will this ticket do to my rate? And what is the best I can make out of this situation?

Most companies don%26#039;t routinely check your record on renewals because of the cost of doing it, but SF may check young drivers more often and see it more quickly. What they do with your rate depends on their policy for young drivers, but it almost surely will increase your premium because of the excess over 30. Be prepared for it.

It%26#039;s also possible that the traffic court will reduce the %26quot;excess%26quot; or waive the ticket entirely if you%26#039;re honest and polite, but I wouldn%26#039;t depend on that happening. Be ready for the fine and higher rates.

knowing if yer in Canada or Africa might help. Canada, second ticket gets u 25% increase in premiums

Who is at fault in this car crash scenario?

I was making a left turn to go into the college campus.I was traveling SOUTH as I approached the solid green light, and I waited for ~ 3-4 minutes until traffic cleared. I see a purple pt cruiser enter the campus through a RIGHT TURN ONLY lane and it is coming from the south (so the direction its headed in, is north), behind it approximately 15-20 feet is a honda accord that is in the TURN ONLY LANE as well and it looked as if it was going to turn into the school. It was too close to the intersection to change lanes so i start entering the turn. the honda accord hit the right side of my car at where the front wheel is and smashed the wheel into the body of the car. the police arrogantly told me i was at fault and did not look around to check the possible speed or anything. the other driver claimed that the speed they were traveling in was 40 mph. mind you my whole right front side was completely destroyed and my car is totaled from the impact. the police looked up the wrong tag and told me that this tag was not belonging to my car- (she typed in the wrong characters.) Then she made out the ticket to my father who is the one who owns the vehicle; but he was not in the accident, he was at work. i was put down as fault, but i do not see how if the other driver was going straight on a turn only lane and trying to change at the intersection it is my fault. who would be at fault if it was taken to court? thank you. there were no witnesses also..

People get confused. There are two types of "fault". One type is where you receive a citation for a traffic violation, that fault is determined by a judge when/if you go to court on the charge. (in your case I would recommend you going and pleading your case) The other "fault" is to determine who pays for damages in case of an accident. Insurance companies determine the second kind of fault based on police reports, witness reports and driver(s) statements. One type of fault has nothing necessarily to do with the other type. It is true that insurance companies place a great deal of weight based on the police report. However, if you don't agree with their findings, you can appeal. Appeals almost never are successful though. No one here can determine either type of fault. Good luck

If he was in the turn only lane and then went straight and hit you he should be at fault. If your left turn was a left turn yield on green it would be your fault. I had a hard time understanding what you are trying to explain.

Unfortunately in an accident like this, if i were the officer i would have cited both of you and had you pay for your own damages. Why, you had to cross an oncoming lane therefore you didn't give right of way or waited until the road was clear before making your move. The other driver made a simple error but also made a lane change in an intersection. People go straight out of a right turn lane all the time. A simple error but since you were turning you had to give way. Sorry.

Also, your father should not be ticketed, you should. Check with the officer's supervisor to see if she made an error.

From your description, in your situation, you cannot turn across oncoming traffic which you did. If that car (that hit you), actually made the right turn, you would have been in conflict with the driver anyway and may have hit them in the driver's side. It's a timing issue. You had to be into your turn for the other driver to have hit you as described. If they went ahead and made their right turn, how close would you have been to hitting them in their driver's side?

Always presume the other driver will do the unexpected. Just because you have a green light doesn't mean you have the absolute right of way into an intersection. Just because a driver has their turn signal on, doesn't mean the will make the indicated turn.

I would be interested in the town and the intersection that this accident occurred. I'm not a lawyer.
