I have a silly question about purchasing a car...?

So I am buying my first car next week and I was wondering what happens when I drive it off the lot. Do I just drive it away with no licence plate and insurance and then get it afterward? What happens with that? I tried searching online, but couldn't find much info about it! Thanks!

The dealer will get you plates, registration, insurance card, and inspection stickers.

No. The dealer will put a Temporary plate on the vehicle and will order your permanent one which will come in a few weeks. You have to also get an insurance "binder". Give your insurance company the info on the new vehicle and they will give you a binder which will cover you right away until you get the actual policy.

If you already have a car that is insured the dealer will call the insurance company and have the information added to that policy. If not you will need to get insurance before they can let you drive the car home. You may have to get the car information and take to an insurance agent and put a deposit down to enact the insurance. After the deal is done and the insurance is verified they will install a 30 day tag, you use that tag until your permanent license plate comes.

Most sellers have insurance which will cover you to get the car home, and probably for a couple of days after that. If you are buying

privately, the seller may have insurance for other drivers. Ask. Alternately, most insurance companies will give you temporary cover if you tell them what the car model is, yr age, etc., before you buy. Then when the car is registered, you phone the details thru.

Just don't even get into the car without insurance. It can be an expensive experience.
